San Quentin is Wheelone of the most infamous prisons in the United States, located in Marin County, California. Established in 1852, it is the oldest state prison in California and has housed some of the most notorious criminals in American history. Over the years, San Quentin has become a symbol of the complex relationship between justice, punishment, and rehabilitation.

The prison is perhaps best known for its death row, where individuals convicted of the most heinous crimes await their execution, though California has had a moratorium on the death penalty since 2019. San Quentin also holds the distinction of being one of the few prisons in the country with an active inmate-run newspaper, the San Quentin News, providing prisoners with a platform for expression and self-reflection.
